I’m On the Waiting List…Now What?

For those seeking rental assistance, it can be a frustrating situation. Unfortunately, due to a combination of high demand for services and funding cuts, long waiting times are discouragingly common. Waiting times are currently nine years or more for New Hampshire Housing’s Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) program (Please click here for our FAQ about why the list is so long.).

Remember, our waiting list is OPEN, and we are happy to accept your application. But there are steps you can take while you wait that could improve your chances of receiving help in a more timely way.

  • Keep your information current. Even if you find yourself changing location and addresses often, it is very important that you update your address with our office each time you move. This is our only way of contacting you each year to see if you want to remain on the waiting list. If we cannot reach you, you may lose your spot and have to reapply.
  • Get on as many waiting lists as possible. There are many agencies and housing authorities across the state that offer subsidized housing or housing choice voucher programs. Their waiting lists are different than ours, and in some cases could be shorter. We list subsidized properties and local housing authorities in our online searchable Directory of Assisted Housing. You can directly contact any of the properties or agencies in our Directory of Assisted Housing to find out about their programs. The more flexible you are and the more lists you apply to, the better your chances at receiving assistance.
  • Use 211 NH. If you are in need of immediate help and are in New Hampshire, dial 2-1-1 toll-free to speak with someone who can help you find the resources you need. You can also search their directory of services online at www.211nh.org.
  • Call our Assisted Housing Division. If you have questions about how to get on our waiting list or the status of your application, you can call us at (800) 439-7247.

I applied to Nashua almost a year ago. Do I have to reapply? I would like to keep my name on the list. Please help. Thank you.

Since Nashua Housing Authority’s list is separate from New Hampshire Housing’s list, your best option is to contact them directly to check your status. Their number is 603-883-5661.
