New Hampshire Housing Approves Over $1 Million for Notre Dame Senior Housing

Funding will be used to turn former school into affordable apartments for seniors

New Hampshire Housing’s Board of Directors recently approved over $1 million in funding for the development of Senior Living at Notre Dame in Berlin. The funding will be used by Affordable Housing, Education, and Development (AHEAD), which is based in Littleton, to renovate the historic Notre Dame high school into over 30 units of affordable housing for seniors.

Notre Dame high school has sat empty for several years, and the project represents the long-awaited revitalization of a community resource. The extensive renovations planned include lead abatement and the installation of an energy-efficient wood chip boiler. Residents of the finished project will have access to supportive services and will have the benefit of paying a fixed percentage of their income toward rent. Construction is planned to begin in October.

“This funding award was a critical component of AHEAD’s ability to move forward with the Senior Living at Notre Dame project,” said Mike Claflin, Executive Director of AHEAD. “We are thrilled that the New Hampshire Housing Board recognizes the significance of this project as it not only provides additional housing options for low-income seniors, but it is also helping to revitalize a distressed neighborhood and rehabilitate a property that is of great historic significance to the Berlin community.”

“We’re pleased to help preserve this valued and historic property and give it a second life,“ said Dean Christon, Executive Director of New Hampshire Housing. “This type of housing for seniors is in high demand in the Berlin area, and our hope is that this project fills an important housing need for local residents.”

So glad to hear this. Senior Housing is so important for our senior to live respectfully and securely in their “Golden Years”. The knowledge of knowing that there is help close by gives the families truly a sense of “Peace of Mind”.
